Milne cites the Victoria British Colonist. and says "South Vancouver Island and northwest Washington generally felt this shock. In Victoria the rumbling motion seemed to be from south to north. Plaster was cracked, loose bricks fell, and some persons ran into the street. At 9 a.m. on the same day a slight jolt was felt in Victoria. The main earthquake was felt in Saanich and Esquimalt. At Cowichan the boats were shaken but at Nanaimo the tremor was not felt. Port Townsend and Seattle, like Victoria, felt the earthquake and at Somenos there were two gun-like shocks although Somenos appears to be north of the main area of the disturbance."

A check of the Victoria British Colonist was made, but we were unable to locate the article. A review of the Oregonian and the Washington Standard found no mention of this event. Mention was found in the Seattle Daily Intelligencer, but the earthquake was not reported to have been felt in Seattle.

Event #157 - Summary, and parameter estimates with source IDs                                            Full references for Event #  157
Sources for this event indicate that it was felt in Seattle, Tacoma, Puyallup, and Olympia, and Port Townsend, as well as on Bainbridge Island. Persons were reported to have fled into the streets in Seattle, but no damage was reported. Previous catalogs indicated that this event was located at Bainbridge Island because the weather observer there reported feeling six earthquakes. His report: "December, 1880: Earthquakes as follows: 7th at 5:45 p. m. -- Direction north to south, motion wavy. 10th at 5 a. m. -- motion perpendicular. 12th at 8:40 p. m. -- north to south, wavy. 14th at 7 p.m. -- tremulous. 26th at 10:16 p. m. -- wavy. 29th at 11:25 p. m. --also wavy. All of the above very distinct, but not severe. Rather pleasant, than otherwise, Riley M. Hoskinson, observer." suggests little difference in shaking intensity between the several events in the sequence. On the basis of newspaper accounts, it is obvious that the most widely felt earthquake of this series was on December 12, and that the December 7 earthquake was also felt over a considerable area . It seems possible that the larger events originated elsewhere in the Puget Sound region, rather than on Bainbridge Island.

This is the largest of the earthquakes in December of 1880, and is well documented and well represented in catalogs. It was reported felt from Victoria to Portland and to Astoria, Oregon. It rang a church bell and the bell of a parked locomotive in Tacoma, damaged hop-kiln chimneys in Sumner, and a chimney in Seattle. Dishes were thrown off shelves, clocks stopped, and lamps overturned. The event was reported *not* felt at Neah Bay by weather observer James G. Swan. The Spokane Times mentions the earthquake being felt in the Sound, but it was not reported to have been felt anywhere east of the Cascades. The Dec. 13th issue of the British Colonist is not on microfilm, and the earthquake was not mentioned in the issue of the 14th. Milne included this event twice, once with an incorrect date of 1860.

Bainbridge Island, reported felt only by weather observer, repeated in many catalogs, which usually give the time as 11:16, although the original source (difficult to read) appears to read 10:16 PM. Some catalogs estimate intensity, but the origin of the information used to make intensity estimates is unclear.

Volcanic Activity This event apparently concerns a volcanic event in Idaho, possibly in August of 1881. Townley and Allen state: "188? Walla Walla, December 9, 1887.-Several years ago a loud explosion somewhere in the Salmon River Mountains shook the whole country there, and reports of a volcano breaking out and lava flowing over the mountain trails astonished the country. The San Francisco Chronicle and Portland Oregonian sent reporters there, but neither could find any trace of a volcano, though whole forests were ablaze. Joseph Baker, of Mount Idaho, an old miner, reports to the Walla Walla Statesman to-day that he has discovered the scene of the explosion, near some new diggings. The country for half a mile around is full of fissures newly cracked, but there are many others covered with moss, denoting previous explosions.-San Francisco Chronicle, December 10,1887. The place is only twenty miles from Mount Idaho.-Walla Walla Statesman, December 9, 1887. [This record should have been under Idaho. See August 8, 1881 in Idaho list.]"

During a review of original newspaper accounts of earthquakes in Washington and Oregon, we discovered an earthquake which occurred on April 30, 1882 at 10:48 PM local time (May 1, 6:48 GMT) and was widely felt in Oregon, Washington Territory, and southern Vancouver Island. It made a considerable impression on the populace although apart from a few broken chimney tops and window panes in Olympia, and crockery and glassware damage there and elsewhere, no damage was reported. An extended abstract and isoseismal map are published in 'R.S. Ludwin and A.I. Qamar, 1991, 1882 Earthquake Rediscovered, Washington Geology, V. 19, N. 2, pp. 12-13.' The intensity 5 and 6 contours for this earthquake appear very like those of the 1939 "Olympic" earthquake (1939 event was located at 47.4, 122.6 per EQ Hist. of US). This similarity of isoseismal contours suggest that the two earthquakes were of similar location and magnitude. The 1939 earthquake has been considered subcrustal, probably at a depth of 40-70 km within the subducting Juan de Fuca plate; its magnitude has been estimated at 5.75-6.2.

Felt in Portland. From the Oregonian "There was a very perceptible earthquake shock at a few minutes before 12 o'clock on Friday night and another slighter one a few minutes after. They were not violent enough to awaken persons who were asleep and were not noticed in the Oregonian office, on account of the jarring of the machinery in the press room, but persons who awoke in quiet places noticed the movement of lamps, furniture, etc. Some persons supposed that the disturbance was caused by a violent wind, others imagined that some one was trying to break into the house."

There is some confusion about the exact time of this earthquake. The MWR (carried forth into all of the catalogs) says: "Olympia, Washington Territory, 3d: a light earthquake shock occurred at 11:30 p.m. (local time). Light shocks continued until 1:30 a.m., of the 4th." The Seattle P.I. has a one-paragraph article that sets the time at 12:50 AM. It mentions no damage, but calls this "one of the most severe ever experienced in this region". A search of further issues of the Seattle P.I., the Chehalis Bee (weekly), and theTacoma Daily Ledger for additional accounts was unsuccessful.

It appeared to travel northward, as it was yet more visibly felt in Harrington, some twenty-two miles north of here. No casualties." Sprague is located southwest of Spokane at about 47.25N, 118W; Harrington is at the junction of Routes 23 and 28. The Washington Standard suggests that these earthquakes were the events felt in Puget Sound around the same time. This seems unlikely, but not impossible as the times are quite similar. Newspapers in central Washington should be checked.

The Oregonian describes this event as "distinct" with "no damage" and gives the event time as 2:15 AM. This time differs from that given in previous catalogs, all of which refer back to the Monthly Weather Review: "at 5:26 a. m. on the 27th a heavy shock of earthquake occurred at this place. It was accompanied by a rumbling noise". No mention of this event was found in the Washington Standard or the Tacoma Daily Ledger, which were checked.

The time of 8 AM reported for this earthquake in the Monthly Weather Review and all subsequent catalogs appears to be incorrect. The newspaper account states that the event was at 5 AM. Although this earthquake is listed in many catalogs as intensity V, it appears that it was felt only in Olympia. The same newspaper report appears in both the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and the Oregonian: "Olympia, Oct 9 -- A sharp earthquake took place here about 5 o'clock this morning, rousing up most of our citizens. The vibrations seemed to be from east to west. The shock was followed by a rumbling sound, which continued for a few seconds".

This earthquake was apparently felt from Victoria to Olympia (where Rockwood reports that sleepers were wakened), and from New Westminster (B.C.) to Port Angeles. There is a confusion about the time - the monthly weather report says: "Port Angeles, Washington Territory: a slight earthquake shock was felt about 1:40 a.m. of the 9th". However, most catalogs, starting with Holden (1898) give a time of 10:40 PM, based on Rockwood and Plummer.
Although the Index to the Oregonian lists "at Puget Sound, Dec. 8 1885, no damage", the article could not be found. Additional newspaper research should be pursued.

Felt from Olympia to Walla Walla. Additional accounts from Yakima should be sought. From the handwritten and microfilmed U. S. Weather Bureau Climatological Records for the State of Washington: Kennewick, Yakima County - "At 3:40 a. m. April 29 felt a shock of earthquake vibrations from west to east accompanied by a rumbling sound. Lasted some 10 to 15 seconds. Chairs were rocked and pictures swung from the walls. A slight tremor all the while, clock stopped." The Spokane Falls Morning Review also states that the earthquake was felt distinctly at Davenport and Walla-Walla. This earthquake was also felt in Olympia, according to the Washington Standard: "A slight shock of an earthquake was felt about four o'clock this morning."

Plummer (included as part of WPPSS documentation) who states: "In the fall of 1889 several slight tremors were felt in the Puyallup valley and in the regions immediately surrounding Mount Tacoma, and in September, 1891, there were several small shocks felt at Tacoma, but these were so slight that to my knowledge no record has been kept of the dates or directions."
