About the PNSN Legacy Webicorders
The following is a selection of interesting earthquakes or seismic events
for which copies of the legacy webicorders were saved as a record for
comparison with other events. This is not a comprehensive
list of interesting events, just those for which webicorder
records were kept and covers the time period from 1998 through 2005.
Most recent is at the top.
On June 3, 2004 at 2:40 AM PDT a meteor burst was seen, heard and felt in the central Puget Sound. The PNSN recorded this event on many seismograph stations throughout the area. Asterisks (*) below designate stations where we picked an arrival time for this event using full-resolution data (the webicorders are quick-loading, but incomplete representations of the data.
From what we can see on our records,
record section of first few stations with map)
this appears to be a single explosive source rather than a "sonic boom" type moving source. Our estimate of the location of the "boom" places it at an altitude of 43 km over Snohominsh, WA. Since there were reports from eastern Washington (and even Colorado) of seeing it, it must have been high enough there not to have left a sonic trail on our eastern Washington stations. When it arrived near Snohomish it apparently exploded.
We recommend that you return to this page rather than using the navigation on the webicorders

November 15, 16, 17, and 18, 1998: Interesting periodic signals from Mt. Rainier, recorded at station RCS, located at Camp Schurman. Tiny low amplitude signals, probably from ice are initially irregular in time. Signals become regularly spaced, about every 16 minutes, on 11/16 at 6:00 PST, continuing with progressively changing frequency until about 13:30. The tiny periodic events pick up again on 11/17 and continue into 11/18. The changes in event frequency cause the events to
line up on the page in a way that looks like a chevron flight of birds.
