Event #399 - Summary, and parameter estimates with source IDs |
The catalog of Berg and Baker was the first to list this earthquake. They cite the Oregonian: "Feel Earthquake Shocks - Portland Experiences Slight Tremble In Early Morning -- Did Portland experince an earthquake shock early yesterday morning? --People about the city were asking each other that question yesterday, and although several are quite certain they felt three slight shocks, there is no way to ascertain whether or not the earth trembled, as there are no instruments here which record earthquake shocks. W.D. Fenton is certain he felt two distinct shocks about 4 o'clock yesterday morning, when he was awakened and noticed that the glass in a small bookcase in his bedroom was rattling and the bed seemed swaying. There was a perceptible jar and rattle and Mr. Fenton experienced the same queer sensation that he noticed some years ago when an earthquake was felt here. He says after about a quarter of a minute a second shock was felt. A woman in another part of the city noticed three shocks at intervals of a few seconds very early this morning, she thinks about 4 oclock...." |

People about the city were asking each other that question yesterday, and although several are quite certain they felt three slight shocks, there is no way to ascertain whether or not the earth trembled, as there are no instruments here which record earthquake shocks. W.D. He says after about a quarter of a minute a second shock was felt. A woman in another part of the city noticed three shocks at intervals of a few seconds very early this morning, she thinks about 4 o'clock. She says the motion seemed to be horizontal, and she is firmly of the opinion that there was a real earthquake. A number of people called up the Weather Bureau yesterday and inquired if there had been an earthquake, but District Observer Beals was unable to tell as there is no seismograph in the Portland Weather Bureau. |
