Volcanic Activity From the recollections of Edna Bolduc Anderson: "One day, in that July (1893), George and I were ... on a high ridge, just above the Big Mashel River, overlooking a canyon. ... The sky was clear. .... We glanced up and across to Mount Rainier. We saw great clouds of black smoke coming from her crater. It curled up, far into the clear, blue sky. I'll never forget that sight as I have only seen it the one time." |

Transcription: One day, in that July (1893), George and I were hunting the cows, to bring them up for milking, as they would wander for miles searching for green feed. We were on a high ridge, just above the Big Mashel River, overlooking a canyon. It had been a hot day. The sky was clear. We had stopped to rest and listen for the cow's bells. We glanced up and across to Mount Rainier. We saw great clouds of black smoke coming from her crater. It curled up, far into the clear, blue sky. I'll never forget that sight as I have only seen it the one time. |
