October, 1865

On the 15th at 11 PM a slight shock of an earthquake was felt which was repeated at intervals for half an hour. I at first attributed the cause of the jarring motion to a heavy surf which was beating on the beach, but on the night of the 30th at 10 o'clock there was a much heavier surf without producing any vibration of the building.
