Transcription: FORT NISQUALLY, PUGET SOUND Dec 21, 1837 "About one o'clock in the night a couple of shocks of earthquake were felt, commencing like distant thunder, our houses [* see below] at the second it made us jump in our beds throughout the Fort. The Indians were much terrified, and could not make out the cause of the shaking so in their lodges." [* Dickey was unable to transcribe a portion of the manuscript.
