Transcription: Earthquake Here Friday Evening General in Area
DISTINCT SHOCKS FELT AS DISHES RATTLED AND PICTURES SWUNG.
Port Townsend felt three distinct shocks Friday evening in the earthquake which was felt generally throughout the Straight of Juan de Fuca area. The first occurred at 8:07, the second about a minute later and the third at 8:10 o'clock. The second was the most severe and those who noticed it have about the same story to tell of its severity.
Dishes in cupboards were rattled, pictures swung on the hangings and those chandeliers not rigidly fastened swung back and forth in a north and south direction. So far as has been reported, no damage was done here, and no reports have been made of damage from any of the affected areas which comprise Vancouver Island cities, the Olympic Peninsula and points on the east side of the sound.
Jefferson County superior court was in session at the time of the shock. Sheriff Carroll rushed to the basement of the building, believing at first that the boiler had blown up. Some excitement was caused, but this soon passed as those present learned what the trouble was. |
