Known from the Spokane Spokesman Review, which says:"Earthquake shock at Helena Earth Oscillated for Three Minutes - No Damage Done - Helena, Sept. 5. -- A shock of earthquake was experienced here at 12:15 this morning. It lasted about three minutes, and was distinctly felt all over the city. No report of damage has so far been received. FELT AT BUTTE -Butte, Mt., Sept. 5. -- Distinct shocks of earthquake were felt here and at Helena and Great Falls at 12:25 this morning. At Helena the shocks were very distinct. People rushed from hotels and buildings and much excitement was caused." In "Montana Earthquakes, 1869-1879" (Qamar and Stickney, Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology Memoir 51), the Great Falls "Tribune" is cited as a source for this event. |
