This event is known from only a few sources. It does appear in Reid's scrapbook, and is supported by an article from the Victoria Daily Times, which was included in the WPPSS documents. Reid said: "Vancouver B.C. & neighborhood PST 1:25 pm 1 Sept, 1907 GMT 22h 55m IV-V direction N-S -Register for Victoria, BC, Circ 17; BSSA Felt in Victoria and in the neighboring islands and in the mainland. Probably over an area of about 15,000 sq mi."
From The Victoria Daily Times: "EARTH TREMOR IS FELT IN VICTORIA - Shock of one second's duration was experienced on Sunday afternoon. -- An earthquake of about one second's duration was felt in the city at 1 P.M. on Sunday.... The shock was ... felt by a number of persons, especially in the vicinity of Cedar HIll where it was most pronounced." Additional newspaper research might be of interest. The notes from Reid might be overdrawn. |

"EARTH TREMOR IS FELT IN VICTORIA
"Shock of one second's duration was experienced on Sunday afternoon.
"An earthquake of about one second's duration was felt in the city
at 1 P.M. on Sunday, the movement being either from north to south or
vice versa. The meteorological office seismograph did not register the
shock on account of the short duration of the movement and the fact that
the local instrument does not register earthquake activity except in the
line between east and west or vice versa. The shock was, however, felt
by a number of persons, especially in the vicinity of Cedar HIll where
it was most pronounced.
"In confirmation of the individual reports concerning a period of
earth unrest received from points adjacent to the city, a telegram to
the Times from Ottawa today announces that: 'The seismograph at the
Dominion Observatory at 12:15 P.M. yesterday recorded a more severe
earthquake movement than it did of the Jamaica earthquake."' |
