Berg and Baker were the first to catalog this earthquake, felt in Portland, citing the Oregonian. The Intensity of IV seems high, given the descriptions: "... The tremor was felt at several points in the city but was not of any great violence nor was the shock of any great length. The shake occurred a few minutes after 4 o'clock and lasted about 20 seconds... in the Swetland building [people] noticed the windows begin to rattle and felt a distinct jar.... Mrs. J.T. Morgan... and the members of her family felt a decided upheaval and then a distinct quake. They saw the windows move and the dishes on the table shake. Several others ... telephoned to The Oregonian that they had felt the earthquake.People in many of the large buildings felt the shock but attributed the slight trembler to the vibration caused by heavy machinery. " No other newspapers have been researched.

Known only from the Vancouver Progress article transcribed in the WPPSS documents: "Nelson April 4 - W.R. Jarvis, warden of the Provincial Jail believes that an earthquake tremor was felt in Nelson last week. There were two occasions on which the cell doors and all the movable iron work rattled without any apparent cause. ...The guards and prisoners both noticed and commented on the incidents at the time."

Previously uncataloged. The sources of information are the Port Angeles "Tribune Times" and the Victoria Daily Colonist. It was slightly felt in Victoria, and more strongly felt in Port Angeles.
From the Port Angeles "Tribune Times":
"At about 6:10 o' clock Monday morning last the region about Port Angeles was treated to another slight shock of earthquake, very much resembling the visitation of two or three months ago. The tremor while slight, was distinct and unmistakable and was very generally felt by the residents of this city. Those who were up, and about their daily duties at that time, nearly all felt the disturbance, and many who were still slumbering were awakened by the motion. Others slept through it blissfully. The motion was sufficiently heavy to shake buildings decidedly and rattle loose windows, but not strong enough to do any damage of any kind. Many people who observed the phenomenon declare that it was accompanied by rumblings, while others say they did not hear any such thing. The disturbance was evidently local, as no accounts of it are given in the dispatches from other localities."

Dr. Garry Roger's dissertation gives the magnitude and felt area given above. Newspaper and catalog entries are in reasonably good agreement for this earthquake. The BSSA (1911) says: "....No damage was reported at Victoria, B.C., but at Bellingham, Wash., it is said that a few frail chimneys were thrown down.
From the Oregonian: ".... Bellingham, Wash., Sept. 28. -- A distinct earthquake shock was felt here at 6:39 tonight. The shock was of short duration and did no damage in the business district, although those who were in the upper stories of buildings and several who occupy structures that are built on piling along the waterfront say that the shock caused the building to rock so that they ran to the open fearing a catastrophe, Only one shock was perceptible... No record was made by the seismograph at the University of Washington." Apparently the movement was from west to east. ..." Other newspapers have not been researched, but should be.

Described by Milne: "1912 NOVEMBER 21. Newspapers reported an earthquake in the Lynn Valley and Blenkinsop Bay in south central British Columbia. D The Vancouver Times reported an earthquake was felt from the Fraser River to the end of Burrard Inlet on the same day at 4:47 p.m. The Victoria seismograph recorded an earthquake occurring at this time at a distance of 100 to 200 miles. Another tremor was recorded at 5:15 p.m. but it was not felt."

The BSSA is cited as a source for this earthquake: "A shock at Medford, Oregon. - A slight earthquake is reported from Medford, Oregon. It occurred at 12:40 p.m. March 15, 1913: no damage was done." The Medford 'Mail Tribune' is more verbose but in good general agreement with the BSSA,although a "Y" shaped pavement crack about ten feet long was said to have been caused by the earthquake. It describes the earthquake as lasting five seconds.

Newspaper accounts agree with the BSSA description:
"A slight earthquake on Mt. Rainier, Washington. - About 8:15 o'clock on the morning of July 29, 1913, two earthquake shocks shook Mount Rainier and were felt over an area of more than a hundred square miles. The shocks appeared to be the strongest at Lewis in Lewis County, and were noted at Elbe and Etonville, in Pierce County.
The disturbance is said to have lasted about half a minute. Ethan Allen, superintendent of the National Park, Washington, says the shocks came close together and were so violent that there could be no doubt about their being of a seismic nature. From reports received the shock had an intensity of between V and VI of the Rossi-Forel scale."
Some catalogers report that this earthquake was recorded on the seismometer at Seattle. but several newspapers say that it was not.

This event was preceded by a possible foreshock several hours earlier. There are some discrepencies about the duration of this event. A brief article in the Seattle PI says that the shaking lasted more than a minute, while Reid's notes say: "The second shock was the stumper and appears to have been double, lasting almost 40 seconds with an interval of 15 seconds between the two parts." The BSSA says that the shock was of 5 seconds duration.
Townley and Allen say that this event as felt at Edmonds, Seattle, and Tacoma, with the greatest intensity at Tacoma. They cite "BSSA, 4, 41; S. F. Chronicle, December 26, 1913; Reid's Scrapbook, 3, 194." Reid's notes say that it was recorded in Seattle, but not in Victoria.
The felt area and magnitude source is Dr. Garry Rogers' dissertation.
Additional newspaper research might help to clarify what was experienced.

The felt area of this event is likely to be quite a bit larger than the 1000 square miles given in 'Earthquake History of the United States' The BSSA says: "Olympia, Washington. - The following is quoted from the Olympia Recorder of September 5, 1914:
'Olympia and this part of the state was soundly jolted and jarred at 1:35 this morning by an earthquake shock. First sensation was a tremor or vibration, then came a sharp and severe jolt and rocking motion that jarred the houses, making loose articles rattle, many report. Within two mintes after the shock the telephone central here was getting reports. The quake was felt in Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, and other points. No report was received here today as to the seismograph records at the university in Seattle.'"
The Oregonian reports that the earthquake was felt in Portland at 2 AM, and that two shocks, at 1 and 2 AM were generally felt in Castle Rock, Washington.

The MWR weather observer in LaGrande Oregon described this as being RF Intensity V in Summerville, Oregon. Townley and Allen describe the shock as "medium" and cite the S.F. Chronicle of 1/19/1915. The BSSA, (V. 5, p. 54) describes it as light: "January 18, 1915. - A light earthquake was felt at Summervillle, Oregon. The shock is said to have been felt over an area of forty square miles." Berg and Baker cite the Oregonian of January 19, 1915. Researching newspaper articles might be helpful, as none are yet included in the data base.

This earthquake is well supported by both catalog and newspaper evidence, although a few catalogs have cited the time of the aftershock as the mainshock time. The highest intensity reliably reported in Washington was RF V, at Marblemount. The BSSA reports: "...An earthquake was felt over nearly all of British Columbia lasting in some places twenty seconds or more. It was reported from Vancouver, Yale, Harrison, Penticton, and Summerland. It was also observed at Seattle, Wash. and at Bellingham where doors and windows rattled and sleepers awakened. No damage was done." The magnitude and felt area cited here are from the dissertation of Garry Rogers.

The monthly weather reveiw gives this information: "A slight earthquake which shook eastern Oregon, flooded part of the Baker County golf links with a spring which burst forth within a few hundred yards of a mineral spring. Although the water in the mineral spring is hot , the spring flows ice cold. (Internat. News. Ser.)." Berg and Baker assigned MM Intensity III to this. No newspapers have been checked.

This earthquake was felt in Skagit, Whatcom and Snohomish Counties, most strongly in Mt. Vernon and Concrete. There are no reports of it being felt in Seattle or in British Columbia. Catalogs reporting this event use Silverton as a location because a weather observer there reported it, but the newspaper reports suggest that it was more strongly felt to the north. Neither damage nor aftershocks were reported. In Mount Vernon, a newspaper (the name of the paper is not known) says: "(the) water superintendent was examining the ... pumping station, 16 feet below the surface of the ground when he felt a movement of the earth and swaying of the cellar floor, entirely uncommon to any former experience while down beneath the ground. Realizing it was a quake, he hurriedly ascended the steps. 'I never made better time climbing those steps", said the water superintendent. 'I did not wait to change gears, but went right up to the top on high.' 'It was nature's protest against the democratic administration,' said N. B. Hannay, as he hastened out of the bank to see if the quake had started his auto."

The BSSA gives this information: "Spokane, Washington, March 11, 1918.- At Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington, an earthquake was recorded at 8:26 p.m. on March 11th by the university seismograph. It had an intensity of IV of the R.-F. scale, and lasted about two seconds. It was distinctly felt also at several stations along the Northern Pacific Railway, where walls swayed and doors and windows rattled. It was felt also at Trout Creek and Heron, Montana, and at Cabinet, Clarks Fork, Sant [sic] Point, and Rathdrum, Idaho. - A.M. Jung, Seis. Observer" No newspapers have been researched.

The BSSA reports: "An earthquake was felt at White Bluff, about seven miles west of Spokane, Wash., shortly after 1 o'clock p.m. on April 18th and lasted about four seconds. It rattled dishes and windows and was accompanied by a rumbling noise. A.M. Jung, curator of the seismograph at Gonzaga University at Spokane reports that the time at his station was 1:13 p.m." There is also a report from the White Bluff Prarie weather observer of RF Intensity IV, lasting 4 seconds. The BSSA is the source for catalog entries. It gives this information: "... from C.H. Aldrich of Corfu ... 'The first shock was on November 1st, between 9:15 and 9:30 a.m. This was the most severe and lasted several seconds; it shook goods from the shelves and caused landslides for several miles along the hills. We have had on an average about three shocks every twenty-four hours since, but lighter.'..." The WPPSS documents add: "The November 1, 1918 Corfu earthquake had an epicentral intensity of (MM) V-VI, based on intensity reports from the town of Corfu, Washington, and on reported landslides in the vicinity of Corfu. Based on the seismograph record at the Gonzaga University station (SPO) in Spokane, Washington, it is estimated that this earthquake had a magnitude (MS) of approximately 4.4." A search for additional newspaper accounts from eastern Washington newspapers was fruitless. The local earthquake was overwhelmed by the influenza epidemic, the end of World War I, and the impending famine in Russia.

This large and significant earthquake is well known and well represented, both in catalogs and newspapers. The intensity given is for Vancouver, some distance from the epicenter. Higher intensities undoubtedly were felt nearer the epicenter. Earthquake History of the United States summarizes: "Felt in southern British Columbia and northwestern Washington. Buildings shook at Seattle. Magnitude 7.0." The location cited is from the dissertation of Garry Rogers (1983). He says: "Investigations with the set of P arrival times listed in the ISS place the epicentre on Vancouver Island near the west coast, south of the present town of Gold River which did not exist in 1918. Because of the quality of 1918 arrival times this epicentre has an uncertainty of the order of + 50 km. Felt information collected by Dennison (1919) and supplemented by newspaper investigations suggest the magnitude of 7 (Ms) calculated by Gutenberg and Richter (1949) is correct." Earthquake History of the United States says: "Felt in southern British Columbia and northwestern Washington. Buildings shook at Seattle. Magnitude 7.0."
