Transcription: An Earthquake Story
We've waited and listened to all the earthquake stories that were told us ever since Monday morning, and in our rounds collecting, have secured some choice reimiscence of "gone-but-not-forgotten" shakes. One, which was told to us by a young man with a blonde mustache and a stiff hat, struck us as being -- well, unique. "In the winter of '76," said this youth, "I was running a car in the Raymond and Ely mine in Pioche, Nevada. This mine was 1200 feet deep. An earthquake struck the town from the south and knocked it galley-west. Chimneys tumbled, walls cracked, men jumped, women fainted, and so on; but down where we were there wasn't a quiver. It was only when we got to the surface that we knew there had been any earthquake. Now, how do you account for that?" We didn't account for it. Who can? |
