Department of Natural Ministere des Ressources Resources Canada Naturelles Canada EARTHQUAKE REPORT GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF CANADA PACIFIC GEOSCIENCE CENTRE SIDNEY, B.C. Tel (250) 363-6500 Fax (250) 363-6565 DATE: Tuesday, June 24, 1997 (UPDATE 25/06/97) TIME: 7:40:59 am PDT (14:40 UTC) MAGNITUDE: 4.6 (revised from 4.5) LOCATION: Strait of Georgia, BC (49.24 N, 123.62 W, depth 4 km) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This is an UPDATE on yesterday's earthquake. 42 aftershocks were recorded in the first 24 hours after the earthquake. All were less than magnitude 2 and were not felt. Aftershock activity continues. Aftershocks large enough to be felt may occur in the next few days. Initial analysis of the seismic data shows that the earthquake occurred on an east-west oriented fault beneath the Strait of Georgia. This is similar to the magnitude 3.4 earthquake on June 13, and a larger magnitude 4.9 earthquake that occurred near the same location in 1975. All likely occurred on the same fault.
