Cathlamet. VI. Motion rocking and swaying NE, gradual onset. Felt
by many. Buildings creaked; loose objects rattled. Rumbling
subterranean sounds heard. Disturbed objects observed by
many. Trees swayed violently. Slight damage to buildings.
Lamps swung violently. General alarm. Ground: Filled.
Centralia. One death; ten hospitalized. Damage very heavy esti-
mated at three million dollars. Collapse of building walls
and many chimneys. Two city schools permanently closed,
Methodist church condemned, continued settling of ground
caused extensive damage. Water mains broken and 5000 feet
of concrete noire in city intake water supply damaged severely.
Traffic through city still restricted one week after earth-
quake. Water and sand spouted from ground. (Compiled by

Centralia. Motion rocking, rapid onset. Felt by all. Direction NW.
Loose objects rattled; buildings creaked. Thunderous subter-
ranean sounds followed by crackling heard at beginning. Dis-
turbed objects observed by all. Violent swaying of buildings

and trees- Most chimneys either damaged or down; many
walls cracked. Worst damage to north walls. Over thirty
business and school buildings damaged from very severe to
moderate. Good to poor construction. This does not
include those with only chimney damage. Most fallen walls
to north or south, some to west, very few to east. Chim-
neys twisted clockwise. Damage to water intake to city;
section damaged running N by NW. Damage to some railroad
bridges. Telephone lines twisted together for many miles.
Many objects moved, including pianos. Objects seemed to
have moved from shelves on all walls. Large amounts of
plaster knocked down. Pendulums swinging E-W stopped.
Many were panic stricken. Several sections of water main
sprung leaks as long as three days after earthquake. Leaks
in about 5000 feet of concrete pipe in city intake. Water
supply leaking badly and water supply to reservoirs failed
with shock. One man killed and one injured by falling walls.
"I investigated a report of water flowing from the center
of a field about four miles southwest of town. It seemed to
spout out of the ground about 18 inches high. It was cold
water and was not salty. It flowed for some time. It left
a very fine sand formation for a considerable space around
each hole. The holes vary from 1 to 3 inches in diameter.
There is also one crack in the ground about an inch across
and about 9 or 10 feet long from which water poured. I also
had a report that the caretaker on the Newaukum river intake
noticed gas or air boiling up through the water in the river."

Forest (about 10 miles SE of Chehalis). At the Niels Pauleen
farm near Forest two springs have appeared, The first
came in the 1946 temblor and again on April 13 of this
year another appeared close by. The spring is to the
right of the old Alpha road near the Newaukum river.

Littlerock. Motion rapid, lasted 1 minute. Felt by and frightened
all. Direction SW-NW. Rattled windows, doors, dishes;
house creaked. Hanging objects swung. Trees, bushes
shaken strongly. Shifted small objects, furnishings; over-
turned vases, etc., small objects. Cracked plaster, win-
dows, walls, chimneys. Fall of knickknacks, books, pictures,
plaster, walls. Broke dishes, windows. Many chimneys
broken off and fell to ground. Damage considerable. "Thought
our small frame building would collapse. Very few chimneys

Longview. Two minor injuries. Thousands of dollars damage in
Cowlitz County. Gable of Community Church fell. Damage
generally minor in schools. Broken water main at high school
and cracked beams in cafeteria with other damage. Damage
extensive, but scattered, to business buildings, industrial
properties and residences. Upheaval action broke concrete
basement, pushing up center posts; raised house off founda-
tion. Water and sand spouted from ground. Damage to water

Longview. Motion swaying. E-W, gradual onset. Felt by all. Ground
cracks in yards and road over dikes. Landslides on cuts
along highway. Loose objects rattled; buildings creaked.
Subterranean sounds like heavy traffic was heard before
shock. Disturbed objects observed by all. Visible swaying
of buildings and trees. Damage to chimneys. Walls cracked
E-W. Many brick buildings were damaged. Fallen objects in
all directions. Damage to water main and transmission line
was light. A piano rolled part way across room. Several
refrigerators were upset. Few were panic stricken. Ground:
Sand.
Longview, 2781 NW Nichols Blvd. "There was a heavy upheaval motion,
strong enough to break the basement floor in numerous places,
in some places raising it as much as seven inches. Simulta-
neously, water and sand came through. Water came through in
sizable quantity for about three hours after the shock. It
stopped about 12 hours after, We have removed approximately

50 gallons of sand which came through the breaks in the
floor. House raised about 1 inch off foundation. Move-
ment of house caused considerable plaster cracking.
Ground cracked in about a dozen places and water and sand
gushed out of the cracks. The sand is very fine and nearly
white. Shock lasted about 2 minutes. Direction E-W. Cracked
the double chimney for fireplace and furnace at the eaves.
Moved an upright piano which was resting on glass cups about
9 inches in an easterly direction. Moved the fireplace
mantle 1-1/2 inches from the wall at one end but not at
all at the other; threw a glass figurine resting on the end
of the mantle which was moved from the wall for a distance
of 12 feet, but a similar figurine at the other end of the
same mantle did not even tip over."
Longview (foot of Oregon Way, Standard Oil Co.). VI. Motion rapid,
lasted 2 minutes. Felt by all in distributing plant; out-
doors by observer. Direction E-W. Frightened all in com-
munity. Rattled windows, doors; building creaked. Hanging
objects swung E-W. Trees, bushes shaken moderately. Shifted
small objects, furniture slightly. Overturned buckets of
oil. Ground: Filled, sandy, level.
Nisqually. Motion rapid, lasted 1 minute. felt by and frightened
all. Direction circular. Rattled windows, doors, dishes;
house creaked. Hanging objects swung. Pendulum clocks
stopped, clocks faced NE. Trees, bushes shaken strongly.
Shifted small objects, furnishings. Overturned vases, etc.,
small objects. Cracked plaster. walls, chimneys, ground.
Fall of knickknacks, books, pictures, plaster. Broke dishes.
Twisting and fall of chimneys. Damage considerable to brick,
masonry, concrete. "Shock heavy all through this area. Many
chimneys toppled."
Oakville. One minor injury. Damage considerable. Twenty-five
percent of chimneys damaged. Walls in high school cracked;

lasted about 1 minute. Felt by all in post office; fright-
ened many in community. Direction NE. Rattled windows,

Shifted small objects; overturned vases, small objects. Fall
of books. Broke dishes, windows. Twisting and fall of chim
neys. Only damage was to chimneys, which was considerable.

Oakville. VII. One mile west of Oakville. Motion bumping and
rocking, abrupt onset. Felt by many. Buildings creaked;
loose objects rattled. Loud crashing subterranean sounds
heard immediately before. Disturbed objects observed by
many. Visible swaying of buildings. Damage to buildings
slight. Many chimneys wrecked. Much wall paper cracked.
Many dishes and bric-a-brac thrown down and broken. Pen-
dulum clock stopped. General alarm. Wells and creeks

were very muddy after shock. Goats raced around until
their tongues were hanging.
Olympia. Two deaths; many injured. Total damage estimated at
between five and ten million. Eight capitol buildings
damaged; two closed. Damage to State buildings estimated
at two million. Nearly all large buildings were damaged,
with cracked or fallen walls and cracked or fallen plaster.
All buildings in downtown region and all school, city,
county, and state offices were evacuated for fire marshal
inspection. Two large smokestacks and many chimneys fell.
A large portion of a sandy spit jutting into Puget Sound
north of Olympia disappeared during the earthquake.
Streets were damaged extensively. Water and gas mains
broken. Train service suspended for several days.

Olympia, 4 miles S of. Motion bumping and rocking, NW-SE rapid
onset. Felt by all. Many ground cracks, according to
newspapers. Landslides on Black Lake Road near Olympia.
Buildings creaked; loose objects rattled. Loud roaring
subterranean sounds after shock. Disturbed objects ob-
served by all. Fifty per cent of chimneys down or severely
damaged. Plaster and masonry walls cracked in every direc-
tion. Many brick and masonry buildings suffered major
damage. Well constructed reinforced concrete negligible
damage. Plant stack top fell to SE (top 50 feet of 250-
foot stack). Only one major water main broken in Olympia,
and that was on filled waterfront ground. Objects on SW-NE
shelves in this building fell; objects on NW-SE shelves were

Seattle. One death indirectly; many seriously injured, with
scores reporting shock, bruises, and minor cuts. Damage
estimated at between five and ten million dollars. Many
houses on filled ground were demolished. A preliminary
survey immediately after earthquake showed 75 buildings
suffered considerable damage up to $50,000 each. Many old
buildings on soft ground were damaged considerably. Collapse
of top of one radio tower and one wooden water tank, with
damage to many tanks on weak buildings. One schoolhouse
partially destroyed and closed. Many chimneys toppled.
Heavy damage to docks and stores awaiting shipment Several
bridges damaged and closed temporarily. Many water mains
in soft ground were broken and many basements were flooded.
Telephone and power service were temporarily interrupted.

Seattle, 709 Federal Office Bldg. (central section). Swaying,
waving motion, followed by rough shaking, twisting waves,
latter unusually long. Felt by all. Ground cracks in
many places in city; landslides in some places. Rattled
loose objects; buildings creaked. Loud roaring noise like
approach of a sudden violent storm, but which in a few
seconds was merged in violent, loud, structural sounds.

Disturbed objects observed by all. Buildings and trees
swayed intensely. Considerable damage in some old brick
buildings. Wall plaster extensively damaged in new build-
ings. In this building, relatively modern, plaster bulged
in great masses, with pieces 1 to 3 feet square thrown
from walls. North and south walls most hit. Chimneys,
cornices, parts of sidewalls thrown down, but not to modern
buildings. Many old brick buildings partially damaged;
some few old brick, nearly completely; many old buildings
will require extensive repairs; a few will probably be
condemned. Bookcases and stands against east walls in
some offices of this building thrown face down. North,
west and south wall furniture not displaced. East wall
file cabinets had drawers pulled out about half way toward
west, none disturbed in other directions. Little damage
to water mains at time of shock, but one large main broke
next day. Occasional but not large damage to street bridges.
Telephone interruptions very brief. Lights generally swung
E-W. Pictures on N-S walls were canted, but those on E-W
wall showed little cant. Some doors in this building did
not fit door case after shock. Plaster badly cracked,
broken on N-S walls. Slabs thrown down from side walls.
Fallen plaster not general in this building, but occasional
on 7th and 8th floors. General intense alarm, quite a few
panic stricken. "This shock was so intense, the twisting,
shaking waves so evident and long continued that very few
remained calm. I have been in a number of strong earth-
quakes, and rate this the most fear-inspiring by far."
Ground: Valley, near ship wharf (Elliott Bay), filled.
Seattle (south section). Motion swaying, more or less circular,
rapid onset, lasted about 1-1/2 minutes. Felt by nearly
all. Ground cracked. Loose objects rattled; buildings
creaked. Disturbed objects observed by many. Visible sway-
ing of buildings and trees. Damage to buildings consider-
able. Many old brick buildings damaged, damage largely on
south and east walls. Objects fell mostly north or south,
some twisted 30 degrees but left standing. North-south water
mains broken by east-west ground faults. Plaster cracked,
broken, and thrown down. Many alarmed, some panic stricken.
Water observed spouting 6 feet or more from many ground
faults. Blue silt forced up through minor cracks In base-
ment floors. Many basements completely filled with silt,
with floors forced upwards until failure resulted. Loaded
tanker reported moving about 1 inch vertically at about 3
cycles per second.. This tanker tied to dock in Puget Sound
with keel N-S. Ground: Low, level, sandy, filled.
Seattle. Motion slow, lasted about 1 minute. Felt by and fright-
ened all at railway station. Hanging objects swung N. Pen-

Railroad tracks kinked, buckled, and sank four feet in one
place. Tremendous rock slide followed earthquake: a half-
mile section of a 300-foot cliff slid into Puget Sound.

wrenched from wall. Difficult to maintain balance. The town
electricity failed. Some water pipe connections were loosened,

Washougal (about 7 miles from highway in the Columbia Gorge, near
Cape Horn). First motions short and jerky, seemed to be up
and down, then rolling, heavy motion, accompanied by a
distinct rumble like distant thunder. Rolling seemed to come
from E-W, lasted nearly a minute. House swayed back and
forth. Loose objects bounced around but nothing fell. Wires
connected to house whipped up and down. All the neighbors in
the general vicinity of Skye-Cape Horn felt the shock strongly.
In town the children walking along outside didn't even notice
it, but people in buildings did. Tree tops swayed strongly,

Spokane. The press reported dishes rattled, light fixtures swung,
and many people became dizzy throughout Spokane as the city
was rocked gently by the earthquake. Although the shock was
general over Spokane many people were unaware of it. The tall
radio transmission tower swayed only slightly, technicians
said. No damage to facilities of the Washington Water Power
Company or the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company was
reported. School principals and other officials hadn't
reported any damage to school buildings more than an hour
and a half after the tremor. State patrolmen said no one
had called their offices to report damage. Scores of persons
in all parts of the city reported dishes rattled and lamps,
hanging lights, and pictures swung back and forth.

Portland. Three minor injuries. Started rockslides and bent rails on
the Spokane, Portland, and Seattle railway that closed one line
for several hours. Cracks opened in several buildings; walls
and roofs were damaged; chimneys fell; window panes cracked;
merchandise was knocked off shelves; bric-a-brac broken in many
homes. Estimated damage to Reed College was $2600. Tops of tall
buildings swayed considerably. Electric power interrupted for
30 minutes in East Portland. Telephone service to Tacoma was
disrupted because of the damage to 16 direct circuits. Building

Pullman, Wash. Press. A slight earthquake was reported today by the
Washington State College. The shock was reported to be more
pronounced in Pullman than yesterday's Northwest shock. Win-
dows rattled and mirrors shook.

Toutle. IV. Motion rapid, lasted 1 minute. Felt by several; awa-

Helena, Mont. III. Motion quivering, hardly noticeable, rapid onset.
Felt by several. Very slight rumbling subterranean sounds
heard before and during shock. Ground: Alluvial.

A questionnaire coverage was made of this earthquake but apparently
it was not felt beyond this 20-mile strip connecting Pasture
with Vaughn and East Vaughn.
East Vaughn. VI. Motion bumping or jerking, abrupt onset. Direc-
tion seemed to be N. Felt by many; awakened many. Loose
objects rattled; buildings creaked. Deep rumbling and grind-
ing subterranean sounds before and during shock. Few things
fell from shelves. "Most people awakened described the shock
as feeling like a truck had hit the building. Several ran out
to see if this had happened. Two people felt the shock while
driving. One felt it about one mile west of Vaughn and the
other about 20 miles southeast of Vaughn on the Roswell high-
way." Ground: Sandy loam.
East Vaughn. V. Motion rapid, lasted an instant. Felt by, awakened,
and frightened many. Rattled windows, doors, dishes; house
creaked. Shifted small objects. Direction NE. General feel-
ing was that car had struck building. Ground: Rock, compact,
sloping.
